What to Wear for Hiking in Iceland & the Highlands
Share
Planning to go hiking in Iceland or heading into the Highlands? You’re in for an adventure - steaming geothermal valleys, colorful mountains, black lava deserts, and views you won’t believe. Whether you’re trekking in Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, or just doing a short day hike near the South Coast, dressing right is the key to enjoying it.
Here’s your go-to guide on what to wear for hiking in Iceland, especially in the ever-changing Highlands.
Layer Up - Icelandic Weather Changes Fast
You might start your hike in sunshine, and an hour later be walking through wind, rain, or even snow - yes, even in summer. That’s why layering is essential.
What to Wear Hiking in Iceland:
- Base layer (top & bottom): Merino wool or thermal fabric - keeps you warm and dry.
- Mid-layer: Fleece or lightweight down jacket for warmth.
- Outer layer: Waterproof and windproof jacket and pants to protect against rain and wind.
- Hiking pants: Quick-dry and flexible, or thermal leggings with a shell on top in colder months.
- Wool socks: Bring an extra pair - nothing’s worse than wet feet.
- Gloves and a warm hat - even in July.
- Buff or neck gaiter for wind protection.
Footwear for Iceland Hiking
- Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support are a must - Iceland’s trails are rough, rocky, and sometimes muddy or snowy.
- Waterproof boots are highly recommended, especially in the Highlands where river crossings or wet trails are common.
Don’t Forget to Pack:
- Daypack with snacks, water, and extra layers
- Rain cover for your bag
- Sunglasses and sunscreen (yes, even in cloudy weather!)
- Map or GPS - cell service can be spotty in remote areas
- Trekking poles (optional, but helpful on long or steep hikes)
