Chasing the Northern Lights in Iceland? Here’s What to Wear
Share
There’s nothing like standing under a cold Icelandic sky and watching the Northern Lights dance above you. It’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments - but it’s also freezing. If you're heading out to hunt the aurora, here’s what you need to know to stay warm and enjoy the show.
When Can You See the Northern Lights?
The best time to spot the Northern Lights in Iceland is from September to April, especially on cold, clear nights away from city lights.
You can drive out yourself or join a Northern Lights tour - either way, be ready to wait a little. The aurora doesn’t follow a schedule, but when it shows up, it’s absolutely worth it.
What to Wear (So You Don’t Freeze)
Let’s be honest: standing outside at night in Iceland is cold. You’ll want to dress in layers and keep every part of your body covered.
Here’s what we recommend:
- Thermal base layers - wool or tech fabrics (no cotton)
- A thick, insulated parka
- Waterproof snow pants
- Warm, waterproof boots
- A cozy hat, scarf or neck warmer, and gloves
- Wool socks - maybe even two pairs
Hot tip: Bring hand warmers if you're someone who gets cold easily!
