Forgot Your Warm Clothes? How to Get Winter Gear in Reykjavík Fast

It happens more often than you'd think. A suitcase goes missing, the weather forecast turns, or you packed for a city break and then booked a glacier tour. Whatever the reason, you're in Iceland and you're cold. Don't panic, and don't rush out to buy a full outfit you'll never wear again at home.
First: what do you actually need?
For most winter sightseeing (Golden Circle, the south coast, northern lights), you need:
- A warm, waterproof parka with a hood
- Waterproof pants to pull over your trousers
- Waterproof hiking shoes with a good grip
- Gloves and a beanie
- Ice spikes for frozen paths (see our guide Do You Need Ice Spikes in Iceland?)
Your own jumper, leggings or thermals go underneath.
Option 1: Buy it
Reykjavík has good outdoor shops, but quality waterproof gear is expensive in Iceland, and a full outfit can cost more than your flights. You'll also have to carry it home.
Option 2: Rent it, delivered to your hotel
Renting gets you the same quality gear for a fraction of the price, and you hand it back when you leave.
